GIVING BACK TO AN INDUSTRY THAT HAS GIVEN SO MUCH TO ME

By Mindi Abair

The Recording Academy’s MusiCares®

The life of a musician can seem glamorous, and many times it is. However, from a lifestyle perspective, we are independent contractors that do not have company benefits like health & mental care or retirement plans. There are so many incredibly talented musicians that struggle daily to make a living in this very tough industry. And when they experience a serious life challenge such as cancer, heart disease, mental illness or substance abuse, all too often they do not have the resources to support themselves and their families and recover. I’ve seen it happen all too often.  The people that create the music we love need a safety net.

For 10 years I served as a Governor, President of the Los Angeles Chapter and as a National Trustee of The Recording Academy, the organization that puts on the GRAMMYs. During this time I became involved with MusiCares, the organization that provides a safety net to musicians in these times of need. Over the years, I have referred some of my friends to MusiCares and in every case they got the recovery support they needed. It is a vital organization to our music community, and the only one of its kind to support our music makers.

Long Live Music!

Vive le Musique! I love the name of this wine, as it directly speaks to the survival, support and importance of those that create the music that is the soundtrack to our lives. Each label, hand applied, is a strong copper coin with the words "Long Live Music" which exemplifies everything that MusiCares stands for.

By buying this luxury wine, you will be  supporting this unique and important organization and keeping music alive!

When searching for a wine that will pair with the importance of the work MusiCares does, it needs to stand next to the great wines of the world… and this wine does that and more.

Over my career I was fortunate to represent a few Napa Valley wineries, and thus participated in many wine tastings… all in a day’s work. In particular, when tasting Napa Cabernets back-to-back, you start to see the stark differences between every day or mid level Cabernets, and those luxury level Cabernets that are in a category all to themselves. They display such a superior craftsmanship and excellence in grape growing and winemaking.

I can confidently say Vive La Musique is one of those wines.

An auspicious start right out of a movie… the grapes were harvested days before the great fires of 2017 and this wine fermented safely in a cellar while the region burned within feet outside.

Only 5 cases available, this wine displays an array of intriguing aromatic spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, warm marjoram, bay leaf and dried basil. Big Napa-style fruit aromas are black cherry, blackberry and a hint cranberry.

The taste has strong tannins and even more black fruit with black cherry and blackberry leading the way. It has some weight and lusciousness that balances the very present tannins. The next layer of flavors are what won us over… all those aromatic spices integrated with dried cedar and cigar box. The subtle vanilla creamy finish was the cherry on top of an already superior wine.

MUSIC

During GRAMMY week, MusicCares puts on one of the best shows of the year. As part of their annual fundraising gala, they honor the legends of the music industry. One year I was even fortunate to play with Carol King. This playlist comprises those legends that have been honored like Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Aerosmith, Dolly Parton, Paul McCartney, Billy Joel and Tony Bennett. Enjoy!
